Week 5 Term 1 2019

Dear Parents, Caregivers & Students

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us at the Welcome Mass & BBQ brunch on Sunday. It was a wonderful celebration having so many of our families enjoying the day together and many thanks to the staff for making this morning a priority as well.

Thank you to Mrs Johnson, Mrs Hamilton & the Liturgy Group for the beautiful music at Mass and to everyone involved in this Eucharistic celebration. It was such a great way to start off the 2019 school year.

We are very grateful to the P&F for the fabulous brunch, which I know was very much appreciated by families and parishioners. Thank you also to our Year 6 Hospitality Group, who were such helpful servers assisting on the day and demonstrating great hospitality.

P&F RESTRUCTURING

At our AGM on Tuesday night we discussed some other possible ways of involving parents in the life of our school to fit in with a contemporary view of education and the busy lives of families today. As people have so many commitments, it is becoming harder to have meetings that attract large representative groups together to discuss ideas and important points relevant to schools & parents.

This year the Diocese of Wollongong has Parent Partnerships as a key project to be developing a framework for involving parents and Rebecca Hill has the responsibility for leading this work. Unfortunately, she was unable to attend last Tuesday but she is keen to meet with parents to hear your perspective on ways you would like to be involved.

A date will be organised with Rebecca Hill to allow for her to hear your parent perspective regarding involvement and she will provide information about how other schools have moved to a more contemporary model.

The elections for the P&F executive were held and the Treasurer’s position was filled by Mrs Kristie Swann. I congratulate Kristie and thank her for taking on this role again in 2019. The other positions were not filled but this is not concerning as we look to new models.

In terms of fundraising events, if anyone (or a group of people) is keen to organise an Easter raffle or the Mother’s Day stall or breakfast on Friday 10th May, please let the office know. We would be very grateful for a coordinator who would have many willing helpers on the day to assist.

CLASS PARENTS 2019

One initiative that we would like to reintroduce is the Class Parent network where a parent volunteers to be a contact person for the class or grade. This could be one person from each class or two people from the grade. Often these roles work well if the load can be shared.

Class Parents aim to help parents/caregivers the opportunities for the year group to get to know each other and support each other on a fun/social level. Events can be advertised through the newsletter and these can be family occasions or parent only events. In the past there have been coffee mornings, play dates at a local park, dinner or drinks at one of the pubs or Friday night Tenpin bowling. The choice is yours and would only be 1-2 events each term. It may just involve naming a coffee shop to meet after morning drop-off.

If you are interested or would like more information please contact the Scool Office & leave your name.

SHIPS SWIMMING

Today our school participated in the SHIPS carnival completing against many of our local schools. Congratulations to all of our swimmers and a big thank you to Mrs Norman & Mr Preddey for all of their hard work & organisation. We are also very grateful to the many parents who come along and help cheer our STA students in their races.

Catholic Schools Week is a special time in the year when we celebrate the extraordinary achievements of our Catholic schools. It is a time to give thanks for the wonderful teaching and learning that takes place each day in every classroom.

We acknowledge and thank all who work in the service of Catholic education to

create the opportunities for students that allow them to grow and thrive.

 We thank you for

the wisdom and understanding of teachers the enthusiasm and energy of students

the leadership of school Principals and executive staff

the skill, care and commitment of administrative and support staff

the guidance of our pastors and religious leaders

the support and partnership of parents, carers and local communities.

We pray that each student’s learning journey be inspired by a search for your wisdom and truth.

We pray that we never take for granted the learning opportunities that

we have all been given, and that we use the gifts of learning wisely

and responsibly.

We ask that we use what we have learnt to create a better world for all

people, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and

reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

 Amen.
